Il genere Cardisoma annovera attaualmente le seguenti specie: Cardisoma armatum Herklots, 1851 (Regioni costiere dell'Atlantico orientale) - Cardisoma carnifex Herbst, 1794 (Regioni costiere dell'Indo-Pacifico) - Cardisoma crassum Smith, 1870 (Regioni costiere del Pacifico orientale) - Cardisoma guanhumi Latreille, 1825 (regioni costiere dell'Atlantico occidentale) - † Cardisoma planum Rathbun, 1945.

Descrizione

Tre specie precedentemente collocate in questo genere sono ora collocate in Discoplax. Le quattro specie che rimangono in Cardisoma si trovano nelle regioni costiere calde dove vivono in tane. I giovani individui sono spesso molto colorati con un carapace viola-blu e zampe rosso-arancio (che portano a un livello di popolarità nel commercio di animali domestici), ma invecchiando i colori tendono a sbiadire e le femmine possono essere più opache dei maschi. Sebbene meno estreme rispetto ai granchi violinisti, una chela è solitamente considerevolmente più grande dell'altra. Sono onnivori, ma si nutrono principalmente di materiale vegetale.
